What units do the margin values use?

Points — 1 inch equals 72 points. A 36-point margin trims half an inch on that side.

Does cropping remove content?

Only what falls outside the new margins. Everything inside the cropped area stays exactly as it was.

Can I crop different amounts per side?

Yes. Top, bottom, left, and right are set independently.
